First ACCP General Meeting in Rabat, Morocco, 2018

The first general meeting of the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP) was held in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, for three days from June 26 to 28, 2018. About 220 participants from central and local governments of 32 African countries, various public agencies, private companies, and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) shared information and knowledge regarding solid waste management.

On the first day, Moroccan officials shared the progress and knowledge gained through the implementation of national municipal solid waste management programs and strategies during the morning session. In the afternoon, participants visited the transfer station in Sale and the landfill and waste recovery center in Oum Azza.

On the second day, two main topics were discussed, namely data collection for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, SDG indicators 11.6.1, 12.4.2, and 12.5.1*, and public-private partnership. In addition, the results of the stakeholder and problem analysis based on the data collected during the preparatory meeting in Maputo and the waste treatment technologies of several Japanese companies were presented.

On the third day, financial issues such as how to promote investment in waste management in Africa were discussed, and the status of ACCP activities and plans for TICAD 7 to be held in 2019 were presented. At the end of the conference, the Rabat Declaration was unanimously adopted by the participants to confirm the continuation of efforts to achieve appropriate solid waste management within the framework of the ACCP.
